Following on from our article last year it’s nice to see that the Emirates Air Line cable car crossing has finally opened and in time for the Olympics too.

This new addition to the London transport network was a pet project for London Mayor, Boris Johnson, and at its opening he described it as a “stunning addition to London’s transport network” as well as a “must-see destination in its own right”.

It is estimated that the service will carry 2,500 people an hour with a one way journey, at peak time, taking between four and five minutes. An off-peak journey will last a bit longer and will clock in at about 10 minutes, this is so that the occupants can enjoy the stunning panoramic views of the London skyline.

The service will operate from 07:00 on weekdays, 08:00 on Saturdays and 09:00 on Sundays and will run everyday until 21:00.

Although the service does not accept seasonal travel cards, there is a discount for using an oyster card.

Oyster card fares:

  • Adult single – £3.20
  • Child single – £1.60
  • Round trip – £6.40

Cash fares:

  • Adult single – £4.30
  • Child single – £2.20

Also available is a frequent traveller pass which comes in at £16 for a 10 ride package.

Only time will tell if this new addition to the London transport system will prove to be a big hit or a proverbial white elephant.
