SE1 Safe Roads Campaign – Call for Elephant and Castle Improvements
SE1 Safe Roads is a group aiming to promote the adoption of a safe road strategy for SE1. They want to promote a dialogue between residents and stakeholders in our local road infrastructure. We aim for better provision for pedestrians and cyclists, and a well-planned future for our road network.
In the past two and a half years almost 300 people have been killed or injured on the roads in and around the Elephant and Castle area.
Four Pedestrians have died on these roads since Christmas 2011 and the most recent of these tragedies was the death of a Five year old who was killed by a lorry on St Georges Road. The local community is now demanding that Transport for London takes immediate steps to make the roads safer for all.
The SRC is calling on TfL to:
- Introduce enforced 20mph speed limits on all of these roads
- Improve cycle safety on the Northern Roundabout
- Create more pedestrian crossings
- Narrow carriageways on St George’s Road and Newington Causeway
