As Sir Robin Wales laid out in his article for the PRSupdate Autumn/Winter edition the compulsory licensing scheme of all Private Rented Sector properties – covering an estimated 35,000 private tenancies  in the London borough of Newham – came into affect at the start of this year.

notice on the council’s website states that the Borough has extended the application period for the discount fee until the 31 January 2013. However, this has not changed the legal start date of the licensing scheme.

The price of the discounted licence is £150 per property, to last five years.

The scheme, which is supported by Shelter, will cover an estimated 35,000 households.

The cost per licence will be £500 after the end of the discount period. Those who fail to register for the scheme will be liable to fines of up to £20,000.
