City Guide: Marylebone

Marylebone - home to the poshest Waitrose in London?

Marleybone is a popular area in London due to its excellent central location and its proximity to shops, restaurants, transport links and cultural centres. It has a very villagey vibe with many popular eating and drinking opportunities, and the high street is the perfect place for exploring an exceptional collection of shops with many trendy boutiques.

Marylebone has its own distinct feel, and although relatively small it is incredibly varied.  If you don’t fancy shopping, you can visit Wigmore Hall to hear beautiful classical music. They host over 400 events a season – all likely to be spectacular!

Another alternative is the Wallace Collection, with fine 18th century art displayed in a townhouse between Baker Street and Bond Street tube stations. In recent years it has also hosted exhibitions by the likes of Damien Hirst. For something more light-hearted, you could always head to the Sherlock Holmes museum if you fancy a bit of mystery solving!

In the summer, outdoor culture is on hand at nearby Regent’s Park with the Open Air Theatre in Queen Mary’s Garden. The park in general is a great place to relax on a weekend and equally nice for a winter stroll. Read more of this post

Young London Tenant Socials

Pimms O' Clock!

The idea to host tenant socials came from talking to our tenants; many of those we were moving in were new to London, or certainly the locality, so didn’t know their new area well; where to go for the best meal, pint or coffee – and they found it difficult to bed down and feel part of the community. Comments were also made that they would pass people in the lobby or in the lift, smile and nod or say hi, but nothing more.

As Young London typically lets a large number of apartments in each development that we rent out, we thought we should help our tenants get to know each other. We could take care of the ice-breaking and then the next time they see each other they’d be more likely to strike up a conversation and even meet up and go for drinks.

Woolwich Area Guide

Woolwich Barracks - image: Stu Smith

Like nearby Greenwich, I could write for hours about the history of Woolwich. Its status grew as a military and industrial town, and famously in 1886 Arsenal Football Club was founded there by local workers. While the rich history of the area is still apparent, having undergone massive regeneration in recent years, there is much more than the past to draw new residents to the area.

The regeneration has had a huge impact on the area, and with improved transport links its becoming increasingly popular with professionals. Renting and buying is more affordable than in Central London, and the main line train station serves London Bridge, Waterloo and Charing Cross, with the DLR taking you all the way to bank.

ARLA Examinations – Part 2

A number of staff at Young London are preparing to take the ARLA examinations.

Today, Selina talks about how she is preparing for the exams, and don’t forget to read why CEO Neil Young also decided to sit the ARLA tests.

I have worked in the estate agency business since 2003, and have been working in the field of lettings for almost 10 years. Since joining Young London I have taken on several different roles within the company, learning new things and gaining experience in a broad spectrum of areas.

I have worked hard to build up my knowledge of the business and the industry in general.

Spurred on by the news that our Chief Executive would be taking the ARLA exams, I decided that I wanted to formalise the knowledge and practical experience I have gained; it would also be nice for

it to be formally recognised!

Life in Leafy Earlsfield, London

Belle Amie, Earlsfield

Earlsfield residents love the local independent shops (image by Jon Curnow, via flickr)

Earlsfield is one of those lovely are as in London that often gets overshadowed by its neighbours – in this case Clapham, Balham and Tooting. Since taking a short let in the area myself whilst waiting for my new apartment to be ready, I have taken the area under my wing so to speak and have become a vocal advocate for the area.

Whilst in Earlsfield I lived in a development called The Retreat, which has a really homely feeling. The development’s location has a suburb feeling to it which reminds me of when I used to live in Kent - I found that Earlsfield had all the benefits that I loved in Kent, plus far better transport links and a much easier and shorter commute!

Living Life in Canada Water

Life in Canada WaterUntil 9 months ago I commuted to our South London hub in Southwark from Kent, which made for a long commute and a long day, especially on the days

I wanted to go out after work – its never fun having to run for the last train home!  It was time for a change of location.  Working in the property industry I obviously researched plenty of areas and what they had to offer in terms of value for money and local amenities, and Canada Water was an area I kept coming back to.

I definitely made the right choice, and whether I have to go to our developments in Southwark or Canary Wharf (or even North London) commuting is much easier.

The Jubilee Line takes me straight to Central London, and the new London Overground means the fantastic bars and restaurants in Islington and Shoreditch are only a short ride away. Because the Canada Water area is really well-lit, I feel safe coming home late at night which was a requirement of mine!

Canary Wharf Lettings Market Update

Canary Wharf

Canary Wharf via flickr.com - Robert Orr

For the past two decades the residential rental market in Canary Wharf has steadily grown.

Competing with The City of London to become the new financial heart of the capital, there are around 100,000 employees (ONS Business Register and Employment Survey, December 2010) working for a number of high-profile companies, often working long hours – and they tend to want to live close to work.

In response to an influx of residential developments, the E14 postcode has been regenerated and now provides residents with the same amenities and opportunities as other popular London postcodes. In the past five years many trendy bars overlooking the river have popped up, alongside numerous café’s, restaurants, fitness clubs and boutique shops.
