City Guide: Stratford

image: London 2012

It is rare for the Royal Mail to approve a new postcode, but after gaining royal approval the Olympic Park area has been designated the E20 postcode. After the Olympics, the postcode will gradually become a home to thousands with a high street, residential property and a secondary school – under the further postcodes of E20 1, 2 and 3.

Stratford City is a hive of activity centred on the new Olympic Park. With London set to host the Olympic games from 27 July to 12 August 2012, regeneration has been a key word when describing the London Borough of Newham and neighbouring areas. Much of the redevelopment and regeneration was aimed at sustainability, and many events will be hosted in pre-existing venues such as the Wembley arena, Excel centre, Weymouth and Portland sailing academy and Lord’s cricket ground.

An estimated 10,500 athletes will participate in 302 events, and during the Summer Games London will be full of visitors. Selected on 6th July 2005, London defeated opponents such as Moscow, Paris, Madrid and new York becoming the first ever city to host the games three times (London hosted both the 1908 and 1948 Olympic Games). City Guide: Dalston

Recently described by The Guardian as ‘Britain’s coolest postcode’, this bustling area of North-East London is most definitely one to watch. A hive of activity, Dalston boasts trendy bars, vintage fashion and wide-open spaces. The East London line extension stretched to Dalston recently, providing the area with great transport links and making the area even more desirable for young professionals.

Dalston is home to countless independent business. Rio cinema just off Kingsland road is a prime example. The cinema’s history spans over a century. Initially called the Kingsland Empire, in 1937, the name was changed to Dalston Classic. 1970 saw the name Tatler and finally in 1986 the cinema was called the Rio. With its quirky Art Deco appearance it prides itself on being ‘responsive to the interests of sections of the community often ignored by mainstream commercial cinema’. The cinema celebrates the annual Turkish and Kurdish film festival along with midweek ‘Classic Matinees’. Read more of this post

Getting to Know Greenwich

View of Greenwich and Canary Wharf (image: Dimitry B)

Recently we have been taking a look at daily life and opportunities in different parts of London, and today we turn our attention towards Greenwich. With history, famous attractions and a thriving community culture on its side, its become a favourite destination for living the London life.

The borough is probably best know for  it’s influence on our time reference and season distinction. Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) was established in 1884 at the International Meridian Conference when it was decided that the prime meridian should be placed at Greenwich England. The term GMT was originally coined by BBC World Service and the Royal Navy, with links to said establishments to this day.

The Royal Observatory is home to both ‘The Greenwich Clock’ (GMT) and the Prime Meridian making it the official starting point for each new year. The Royal Observatory also houses London’s only planetarium (a theatre built primarily for presenting educational and entertaining shows).

My New Job as a Property Match-maker

After finishing University two months ago, I was eager to get my teeth into an exciting and rewarding role. Working as a lettings agent was not something I had considered doing three years ago, but Young London has an interesting way of doing things and I

was excited about working in that environment.

Armed with a wealth of customer service experience in both the hospitality and retail industries, I knew the role was ideal for me. At my interview the importance of giving great service was stressed, and as I nodded my head in agreement with their values I had my fingers crossed that I would end up working in an award-winning company as a (property) match-maker!
