Environmentally Friendly Self Build

An Environmentally Sustainable Home from Baufritz
An Environmentally Sustainable Home from Baufritz

How serious are we about the environment?

The general comment is we must look after the planet, and therefore be as ‘green’ as possible. In the recent London Mayoral election the Green Party came third, ahead of the Liberal Democrats. Before the credit crunch, green issues were at the top of the development agenda, these days it seems to be further down the list. The government’s Green Deal is trying to move it back up the agenda once more – let’s see.

Sustainability used to be associated with environmental issues (just look at the language relating to the Olympic Park), but now it seems more about the financial sustainability of a business. Read more of this post

Why Live In… Kings Cross?

Continuing our Why Live In… series, we turn to Kings Cross

Where: King’s Cross is divided between two London boroughs; Camden and Islington.

Transport: One of the best transport hubs in the country. The underground station is on the Metropolitan, Hammersmith & City, Circle, Northern, Victoria and Piccadilly lines and a wealth of bus routes serve the area. National  Rail services can take you as far as Inverness on the East Coast route, and First Capital Connect, First Hull Trains and Grand Central also operate from the station. Tick Tock: Time’s Running Out on the Mayoral Elections

Polling Closes at 10pm tonight

Well, today’s the day that London decides and, for anyone who’s calling into their polling station on the way home from work, now is the ideal time to do some last minute swotting up on the candidates’ housing policies.

Only Ken and Jenny have specific pages dedicated to housing on their websites. Boris and Brian do cover their housing policy though online, as you would expect, so we have provided links to the pages it is mentioned on:

Ken – http://www.kenlivingstone.com/housing

Boris – http://www.backboris2012.com/economy

Jenny – http://www.jennyforlondon.org/fresh-ideas/housing/

Brian – http://www.brianpaddick.com/Ideas

In addition, the candidates have been vocal on housing when talking to the press.  Here are our ‘quick links’ to the most useful resources:

Ken – http://www.timeout.com/london/feature/2532/interview-ken-livingstone

Boris – http://www.timeout.com/london/feature/2540/interview-boris-johnson

Brian – http://www.timeout.com/london/feature/2533/interview-brian-paddick

Quick sticks, polling closes tonight at 10pm.

Olympics Travel Update

Get Ahead of the Games

There are 93 days until the start of the London 2012 Olympic games, and with up to 15 million to travel on London transport during the games we thought a round-up of the latest travel information was needed. Ticket holders are actively being encouraged to use public transport to get to all events; there is no parking available at the Olympic Park (disabled parking must be pre-arranged) and ticket holders will receive a Games Travelcard giving them free travel within Zones 1-9.

Travel times are expected to take a lot longer, and all underground lines will be ‘busier than usual’, with the Central, Jubilee and Docklands Light Railway ‘exceptionally busy’. The earliest events are scheduled to begin at 9am and the latest to finish at 11pm, but ticket holders have been advised to arrive at venues at least two hours prior to the start of their event to get through security. This means people will start arriving at main stations before 7am. Read more of this post

Young Index Q1 2012

youngindexApproaching half (46%) of the investors questioned are considering purchasing additional Private Rented Sector (PRS) assets in London over the coming 12 months. Investment appetite throughout London and the UK strengthened during Q1 2012, but London assets clearly remain more appealing to investors than those outside the capital.

“Outside the London market, I have concerns over future tenant demand”

Among those not actively considering investing in the London market, the reasons given were overwhelmingly finance-related, rather than reflecting a lack of confidence in the market. This was not the case when investors were asked about investing in additional property assets outside of the capital, when concerns over future tenant demand and capital value prospects topped investors’ concerns. London 2012 Olympics: What it Means for Tenants

The countdown begins; there are now only 115 days left until the start of the London 2012 Olympic Games. Some people are excited and have been since London was announced as the host city back in July 2005; others are yet to get caught up in the buzz.

Our lettings consultants are in a prime position to judge the mood of Londoners. They always ask why somebody is looking to move in or out of one of our properties, and recently they have noticed that the Olympics is an increasingly quoted factor when deciding where to live. Read more of this post

Why Live in… Borough

The George Inn - a haunt of Charles Dickens

Regular readers might have seen our series of area guides, where we give you an insight into a fairly broad area of London. We think it is time to get a little more specific; after all, London consists of a series of individual neighbourhoods and communities that differ extensively. Hopefully our ‘Why Live in…’ series will give you an insight into some very special areas. If you have any further questions, whether you want to know where to get the best coffee or want more specific numbers, please get in touch by contacting the office, leaving a comment below or tweeting @younglondon.

Double-Glazing Customer Service; Measuring Up?

And some people say estate agents are ‘wide’…

I’m in the market for new double-glazing and through a combination of never having bought new windows before and being brought up on a diet of That’s Life, Watchdog and more recently, Rogue Traders, I have to confess that the prospect has me filled with horror.

So I set about finding the two most reputable companies that I could think of, Everest and Anglian. Surely they’d be tripping over themselves to put polish to the industry’s somewhat tarnished reputation?

Nope. Read more of this post

Tech Tuesday: Social Media Brand Failures

Waitrose is a company renowned for giving the best service out of all the supermarket heavyweights. Yet even companies as celebrated as Waitrose need only take a single step wrong for a wealth of unwanted attention to be showered down upon them.

Last summer Shell announced a new partnership with Waitrose, with two ‘Little Waitrose’ to feature on existing Shell Petrol forecourts. Some Waitrose customers are disappointed about this, because they feel Waitrose have positioned themselves as an ethical brand; Shell on the other hand often top the list of ‘least environmentally friendly’ companies.

Thoughts and opinions on ethical brands and partnerships aside, it is how Waitrose responded on social media sites today that has spurned criticism and unwanted attention. Read more of this post
